Chapter 2 Sector Two Today
Transportation
Existing Thoroughfares
The existing system of streets and thoroughfares in Sector Two have developed in
response to historical development patterns and natural constraints in the area. The major
thoroughfares that serve to bring traffic into an~ through Sector Two are Bishop Street
and Ranch Road 12. The remaining streets in Sector Two are collectors that serve to
move traffic within the area and to connect with the major thoroughfares. Bishop Street
presents a unique planning challenge, since it serves as both a neighborhood street lined
with houses and a major thoroughfare that bisects the area. Ranch Road 12 serves as a
regional highway, funneling traffic through San Marcos. Traffic pressure, especially
along Ranch Road 12, is expected to grow in the future.
All streets in Sector Two are city owned and maintained, with the exception of Ranch
Road 12, which is state owned and maintained. All traffic signals in Sector Two are
owned and maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation.
Traffic Volumes
The Environment and Engineering Department conducted traffic volume counts on city-
owned streets in the fall of 1995. Traffic volumes represent 24-hour weekday counts.
The traffic counts in Sector Two included:
Location Date Count
Bishop Street northwest of Hopkins Street 10/04/95 8,368
Bishop Street southwest of Ranch Road 12 11/15/95 4,667
Bishop Street northwest of Franklin Drive 10/02/95 4,085
Franklin Drive southwest of Ranch Road 12 10/17/95 2,745
Franklin Drive northeast of Furman Avenue 10/05/95 1,113
Perkins Street southeast of Franklin Drive 10/17/95 738
Franklin Drive southwest of Bishop Street 10/04/95 144
The Texas Department of Transportation conducted traffic volume counts on state-owned
thoroughfares in 1995. Traffic volumes represent 24-hour weekday counts. The only
state owned street in Sector Two is Ranch Road 12. The traffic counts in Sector Two
were:
Location Count
Ranch Road 12 southeast of Bishop Street 13,600
Ranch Road 12 northwest of Bishop Street 6,700
Public Transportation
There are three entities providing transit services in San Marcos, including Sector Two.
Durham shuttle bus system provides shuttle service throughout the area for SWT students
and staff. San Marcos Transit has two routes (Westside Historical and Bishop Street) that
link the residential areas with the central business district and other areas of town.
CARTS (Capital Area Rural Transit System) provides on-demand, door-to-door service
for qualifying residents.
2-11
