<br /> I CJ8:t <br /> expanded educational opportunities about the environment to the local community and <br /> is part of the city's continuing commitment to the future of the San Marcos River. <br /> Project Justification: <br /> <br /> The objective of the San Marcos River Nature Trail System is to provide' an <br /> interactive educational system that addresses the ecology of the river and the <br /> associated riparian community. This system will provide educational facilities to the <br /> entire community through both guided and unguided exploration of the trail system. The <br /> project in conjunction with the planned interpretive center will also produce and provide <br /> accompanying texts, field guides and educational seminars to both public and private <br /> organizations. Currently no such system exists along the river. As the City of San <br /> Marcos continues to grow the need for educational and recreational facilities such as <br /> the nature trail will become more important. We feel that the San Marcos River with its <br /> unique ecology will provide an excellent educational opportunity for people of all socio- <br /> economic backgrounds to learn more about their environment. <br /> Priority Funding Elements: <br /> <br /> The location of the San Marcos River Nature Trail System will provided services not <br /> only to the citizens of San Marcos, but will have far reaching effects on the rest of Hays <br /> county, Austin, New Braunfels and San Antonio by providing an excellent educational <br /> and ecotourism facility. The nature trail system will be completed through a joint effort <br /> from the City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department, River Stewardship <br /> Project, Southwest Texas State University Wildlife Association, San Marcos River <br /> Foundation and Lions Club. This project will make use of an excellent trail system and <br /> recently acquired park lands made possible through the Texas Parks and Wildlife <br /> Recreation Trails Fund and land and Conservation Fund. The current trail system is <br /> handicap accessible and has improved rest rooms and picnic facilities available. This <br /> project will be utilized in conjunction with the installation of the Governor's Green House <br /> as the new San Marcos River Interpretive Center.
