~ 'iðÞ
--
S 10,000 for implementation of a graffiti abatement :¡7fogram. Graffiti is a blight on neighborhoods
and business districts of our community. It is estimated that 75%+ of the existing graffiti is
displayed on public facilities: curbs, street signs, traffic control boxes, bridge abutments, and
drainage culverts. The vast majority of existing graffiti is located in census tracts 101 (62.5% 11m),
104 (57.1% 11m), 105 (83.4% 11m) and 103_2 (76.5% 11m) This request may be considered under
either the criteria for rehabilitation of public facilities or interim assistance for an area exhibiting
objectively derenninable signs of physical deterioration.
Currently, a community based involvement program is being developed utilizing volunteers and
donated supplies. The challenge has been obtaining commitments from volunteers and sufficient
quantities of donated supplies. Funding oftrus request will assure adequate supplies for either the
..
removal or cover-up of the graffiti. Supplies would include but not be limited to: paint, brushes,
rollers, poles, paper towels, removal chemicals, steam pressure washer, and paint sprayers.
Privately o¡.vned graffiti removal companies may be utilized in two ways: (1) an initial massive
cleanup to demonstrate to the citizens the benefit of.such a program and to stabilize the areas so
that community volunteers can maintain; or, (2) if sufficient volunteers can be mustered for the
initial effort, to deal with those areas requiring technical expertise or where use of volunteers
would be deemed unsafe,
p:3ci,.b.
