t'AA
-
Name: SAN MARCOS POLICE DEPARTMENT
ORI: TX 1050100
Section II - Part B Item # 1 - Laptop Computers
Demonstration of Time Savings
The San Marcos Police Department has 65 sworn law enforcement officers. Currently,
there is no information management system in place. All research and report writing is
being done by hand. Officers in the San Marcos Police Department spend an average of
two and a half hours per shift preparing reports at the station. Based on information from
other agencies and in house analysis, utilizing the laptop computers in the field, each
officer is projected to save an hour each day. The SMPD plans to equip 20 of the patrol
cars, two narcotics cars; seven detective cars, and one detective sergeant's car with laptop
computers. The resulting time savings, which is 30 hours a day, is equal to 6.0 FTE's(full
time equivalents) of redeployment time over the course of one year using a standard of
1824 hours for an FTE.
Projected time savings will result from the officers being able to do their paper work in
.
the field. Time savings are expected to result from the reduction of travel time to and
from the station. Use of the laptops will also save time by automating the report writing
process which is being done by hand. The laptops will generate additional time savings
for use in the community policing effort by allowing the officers in the field to generate
property receipts; arrest and search warrants; and search locally available data bases for
suspect or victim information. The laptops v.ill allow officers in the field to access
information updates and bulletins that are put on the SMPD desktop computer network.
