¡; tA C
-
Name: SAN MARCOS POLICE DEPARTMENT
OR!: TX 1050100
Section n - Part C Item # 2 - Computer Aided Dispatch System
Community Policing Activities Summary
San Marcos and Hays County, Texas is one of the fastest growing counties in the State of
Texas. Along with this growth comes problems attendant to that growth. In 1995, San
Marcos and Hays County led the State in per capita consumption of beer. Related to the
alcohol consumption, the city and county were second in the number of alcohol related
accidents per capita. The statistics can be tied not only to the rapid growth in population
but also to the 22,000 students attending a local university.
The addition of the requested computer aided dispatch system and the resulting time
savings will be used to work with and within the community to respond to what the
community perceives as a major crime issue, alcohol related crime(disorderly conduct,
domestic violence, assaultive behavior, vandalism, use of weapons, etc.) and accidents.
.
The SMPD plans to use the redeployment time to enhance its participation with
neighborhoods, and businesses as well as the social service agencies that make up the
Hays County Community Social Service Network. The SMPD in partnership with these
and other elements of the community are working toward a more efficient and timely
response to community problems. Another goal of the SMPD and it partners is to
improve crime and substance abuse prevention efforts in the community.
The SMPD will also use redeployment time to establish a more consistent working
relationship with the university police force. This will include a cooperative policing and
prevention effort aimed at the alcohol related crime and accidents that can be tied to
university students.
The additional redeployment time will give SMPD officers more visibility and
enforcement time particularly during the evening and night shifts when the alcohol crime
and abuse incidents are at their peaks.
