<br />3gP <br /> <br />GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br />AND TEE CITY OJ' SAN MARCOS <br /> <br />I. Policy Statement <br /> <br />The City of San Marcos City Council and the San Marcos Historic <br />Preservation Commission in conjunction with the Main Street <br />Project, the Chamber of Commerce, Hays County Historic <br />Preservation Commission, Tourist Development Council, Heritage <br />Association, Downtown Association ,and other civic organizations <br />shall be committed to the protection and preservation of historic <br />resources located in San Marcos for the cultural enjoyment of all <br />citizens now and in the future. <br /> <br />II. Goals and Objectives <br /> <br />A. Identification. assessment and desi~ation of historic <br />resources by: <br /> <br />1) Identifying historic resources of San Marcos <br />according to local and federal standards. <br />2) Developing a comprehensive inventory including <br />the number and location of historiC properties <br />and sites in San Marcos. <br />3) Increasing the number of properties listing in <br />the National Register of Historic Places. <br /> <br />B. Protection of historic re~ources by: <br /> <br />; <br /> <br />1) Expanding existing districts and/or creating <br />new districts. <br />2) Insuring that all codes and regulations are <br />harmonious with historic preservation goals <br />and objective~. . <br />3) Providing coordination with the building <br />inspection department, Historic Preservation <br />Commission and private sector property owners <br />50 as to encourage protection of historic <br />resources. <br />4) Providing administration of Historic Preservation <br />Commission guidelines with sensitivity so that <br />private ownership of historic structures 'is not <br />discouraged. <br /> <br />C. Use of historic preservation to promote tourism anct <br />revitalization of neighborhoods and downtown areas by: <br /> <br />1) Encouraging private property owners to participate <br />in the promotion and protection of their private <br />property through restoration and not demolition. <br />2) Encouraging activities and printed material to draw <br />the public to areas with historic resources and <br />encourage wn1king, shopping and driving tours of <br />the areas tor tourists, school children and adults. <br />
