To
accomplish this goal the Polie:e Re,~(::'lrch Center (PRe), Sam Houston State University, has established a
Beta Test Site program. This accomplishes two major objectives: 1) end USer inpUt, and 2) verification of
usability.

The Beta program allows the agency to pltrticipate in the design and development process and reSI
the finished product. Agencies are selected to represent a cross section of the Texas law enforcement
environment. A large department will participate in identifying the usc of CRIMES LAW
ENFORCEMENT MODULF. integmtf\d software modules by bureaus or divisions. Tt 'will also comribute
the tcst bcd for CRJMES LAW ENFORCEMENT MODULE to act as a communication server in a main-
frame environment. A sheriffs department will provide for the application of CRIMES LA 'TV
ENFORCEMENT MODULE to the uni<jue requirements ofa rural environment. A mid-sized agency will
act as the test bed for full software application in a moderate demand environment.

Beta testing may require operl1ting paralic! system,; (if an <<genc)' eUIJemly has une: in place), and
additionally documenting any problems encountered with the use of the system. Most problem
notifications will be done electronically, If there is a problem, the software engineer will fix it via a
modem connection to lhe site. PRe expectations are for an active interaction during the Beta testing phase.
At the same time, serving as a Bela site entails a ...ery important advantage - the system is refined in terms
ofa particular agency's opcrations,l1ot someone else's.

PRC shall deliver to a Beta agency sottwarc whieh has passed through extensive Alpha testing
before being released into the field. The PRe's long term goal is TO continue to work with the Beta test
agencies for all CRIMES LAW ENFORCEMENT MODULE and other related programs.

Mlli:ual Reouirements

Police Research Center

Police Research Center will supply the ser.or during testing phase.

Police ResC'arch Center will supply all ofrhe system and application software during the te:.ting phase.

Police Research Center will supply the communication devices for the testing phl:lse.

City of San Marcos

City of San Marcos will provide approved PC workstations during testing phase.

City of San Marcos will maintain curren! system until CRIMES LA W ENFORCEMENT MODULE
reliability is assured.
