Board Approved Policy on Gangs, adopted this year, is a proactive step which clearly <br /> outlines unacceptable dress and behaviors that could promote gang activity, and <br /> consequences for such. <br /> . The Rebound Alternative School, is often mandated for students whose behavior has <br /> led them to an expulsion hearing. Students get academic classes, and group and <br /> individual counseling. They operate on a level system, and with appropriate behavior <br /> can earn their way back onto regular campuses. While every effort is made to keep <br /> students engaged in the educational process, in some instances students' behavior <br /> warrants expulsion from Rebound. <br /> . A violence prevention curriculum is being taught in the lower grades. <br /> . Peer Mediation Program in Junior High and High School: At present this program is <br /> limited due to limited personnel (Jan Niemec at Junior High and Pam White at High <br /> School) who have been trained. Youth are taught skills to mediate in problems between <br /> peers. Staff will be attending advanced training this summer, and will be certified to <br /> train others in the district. <br /> . Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) classes are taught in fIfth grade, Ju~or <br /> High, and Rebound Alternative School. The officer is provided by the Hays County <br /> District Attorney's office, and office space and materials are provided by the SMCISD. <br /> This program puts youth in closer contact with a law enforcement officer in a very <br /> positive manner. <br /> . Sheriffs Department provides graffiti clean up, in conjunction with cooperating <br /> agencies, such as Juvenile Probation, Youth Services Bureau and the San Marcos <br /> Police Department.
