8¡(;
EXISTING RESOURCES
FOLLOWINq IS A PARTIAL LIST OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A
CONIMUNITY-WIDE STRA1EGY TO COMBAT GANG ACTIVI1Y:
'-' ~Cb~SrCUNS()1:IDA:'"TED"'f1M)~ "':E ' ., 'Su.IrO--:ŒTIIDTS:.:cE(Q~
, , . Board Approved Policy on Gangs, adopted this year, is a proactive step which clearly
outlines unacceptable dress and behaviors that could promote gang activity, and
consequences for such.
. The Rebound Alternative School, is often mandated for students whose behavior has
led them to an expulsion hearing. Students get academic classes, and group and
individual counseling. They operate on a level system, and with appropriate behavior
can earn their way back onto regular campuses. While every effort is made to keep
students engaged in the educational process, in some instances students' behavior
warrants expulsion from Rebound.
. A violence prevention curriculum is being taught in the lower grades.
. Peer Mediation Program in Junior High and High School: At present this program is
limited due to limited personnel (Jan Niemec at Junior High and Pam White at High
School) who have been trained. Youth are taught skills to mediate in problems between
peers. Staff will be attending advanced training this summer, and will be certified to
train others in the district.
. Drug Free Schools and Communities funding is available to also address gang issues,
but this funding has been substantially reduced for the upcoming fiscal year.
,c;íi:'" """'.':'O~ ..to, "-, ~SY<30:UNX~ .' ," , ",' O;¡¡¡, ":~,
, ,
. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) classes are taught in fIfth grade, Ju~or
High, and Rebound Alternative School. The officer is provided by the Hays County
District Attorney's office, and office space and materials are provided by the SMCISD.
This program puts youth in closer contact with a law enforcement officer in a very
positive manner.
. Sheriffs Department provides graffiti clean up, in conjunction with cooperating
agencies, such as Juvenile Probation, Youth Services Bureau and the San Marcos
Police Department. However, more resources are needed to' fully eradicate the
problem.
San Marcos Community Gang Task Force Report Page 7
