11/£
Through the end of April 1994, the San Marcos CISD has had 100 expulsion hearings.
The offenses were:
64 Serious and persistent misbehavior
21 Drug-related offenses
6 Gang-related fighting at school
5 illegal weapons
4 Assault
(In the San Marcos CISD, fighting does not always result in an expulsion hearing, but the
San Marcos Police Department is always called.)
Many of the students who are sent to an expusion hearing are sent to the San
Marcos CISD Rebound Center, where students with discipline concerns are given a chance
to work on improving their behavior and their academic performance. (Otherwise, they
would be on th~ streets, and not getting an education). Current enrollment at the Rebound
Center has swollen to 35.
Statistics from the Department of Public Safety, Crime Records Division, paint an
alarming picture of the potential for crisis concerning the juvenile crime rate in Hays
Co~nty (we have no way of determining the number of these youth who are San Marcos
residents or SMCISD students). Some of the highlights of the 1993 report include:
.
Offenses 1993 Total
Murder 1
Rape 7
Aggravated Assault 24
Burgulary 75
Larceny Theft 165
Motor Vehicle Theft 15
Other Assaults 56
Forgery and Counterfeiting 1
Vandalism 43
Weapons (Carrying, Possessing) 13
Sex Offenses (Except Rape and Prostitution) 2
Drug Abuse Violations 29
Offenses Against Family and Children 25
Driving Under the Influence 6
Liquor Laws 32
Drunkenness 18
Disorderly Conduct 40
Loitering Law Violations 3
Run-Aways 174
Overall, 832 Hays County juveniles were arrested in 1993. More boys (620)
were arrested than girls (212). The ethnic report breaks the totals down as 420 Hispanics
and 412 Non-Hispanics. Blacks (part of the noted Non-Hispanic group) accounted for 56
arrests.
San Marcos Community Gang Task Force Report Page 5
