I 3'1 Þ
PART IV
PROJECT NARRA TIVE
Item 1 - New Medium Intensitv Taxiwav Lic¡htinc¡ Svstem is necessary to improve low visibility taxiway
operations for a "reliever" airport already equipped to serve take-offs and landings under low visibility
conditions. It provides a level of safety not currently available.
Item 2 - Reconstruction and Realic¡nment of Existinq Airport Access Road is necessary to provide a safe
efficient means of access to the airport terminal and to businesses located on airport property. The current
access road does not provide a direct route into the airport. The present road follows the property line
which provides a circuitous route to airport facilities. Realignment of this road is required to make more
airport area available for development. Also, the portion of the access road which is common to the airport
and the Gary Job Corps is only one half the width of a previous road and is not wide enough to serve
current or future needs and is in very poor condition.
Item 3 - Preoaration of Environmental Assessment for Runwav 12/30 Extension is necessary due to the
increased needs of the airport to serve larger aircraft and provide a greater margin of safety when the
Instrument Landing System (ILS) is in operation. The current master plan calls for a Phase I 560'
extension to a runway length of 6,200' and then a Phase /I extension of 1,000' to an ultimate runway length
of 7,200'.
Item 4 - Reolacement of Existinc¡ Airport Beacon is necessary due to the age of the existing beacon. The
expected life of the existing beacon is anticipated to become increasingly unreliable. .
. ..
,
