76~
Project Narrative
The City of San Marcos' Main Street Project, Planning and
Developmental Services and the Parks and Recreation Department
are developing plans for a major renovation and repair project
for the historic downtown district. The overall goal of the
project is to make the downtown area more functional and
attractive. The renovation work will include the replacing of
the deteriorating sidewalks, addressing accessibility to meet the
new ADA requirements, removal of the overhead utility lines,
jrainage improvements, addition of antique street lighting and
the addition of landscaping. The construction sequence will take
place in three phases with the first phase being the San Antonio
Street side of the square, the second phase will be the LBJ
Street side and the third phase will be the Guadalupe Street
side.
This grant application is for the landscaping portion of phase
one. The improvements will consist of constructing four focus
areas along San Antonio Street with 4" live oak trees,
irrigation, shrubs and tree grates. A preliminary site plan for
the project is attached with phase one highlighted.
The time frame for this project is addressed in the City's
Capital Improvements Program. Phase one is proposed~for fiscal
year 93-94, phase two is proposed for fiscal year 94-95 and phase
three is proposed for fiscal year 95-96. The City's fiscal year
is October 1st through September 31st.
Since this is a City sponsored project, it will be the City's
responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the landscaping.
This project will be a major attraction and draw for visitors to
shop and browse in the downtown area, so volunteers from the
downtown merchants association will be used to assist with the
naintenance.
I
