Alcohol use is high in all of the ethnic groups. In 1993, the '.lse
of alcohol within the past month was highest among the Anglos, binge drinking was
highest among the Hispanics, and the usual consumption of 6 or more drinks was
highest among the "Others". In 1992, marijuana use was higher among the Hispanics.
A dramatic increase in marijuana use by Anglos and "Others" between 1992 and 1993
made them more likely to use marijuana than their Hispanic classmates. Anti-marijuana
messages need to be tailored to address all high school students.
,
LSD use in lifetime and the last year has increased dramatically for all groups.
However, LSD use in the last month has declined for Hispanics while increasing
markedly for Anglos and especially for "Others". Cocaine use is generally highest
among the Hispanic students. Fortunately, cocaine use in the last month declined for all
three of the groups. While speed and downer use were highest among the Hispanic
and "Other" students in 1992, in 1993 the use was higher for Anglos. The reasons for
this reversal are unclear. Since there has been a dangerously large increase in speed
use in the SMCISD, this reversal may have some importance worth further investigation.
Recent (past year and past month) use of inhalants was highest among
Hispanics but an increase in inhalant use occurred among the Anglos and "Others".
Notice that Anglo students had the highest use of chewing tobacco use in both 1992
and 1993 with an increase in 1993. "Others" showed a big increase in chewing tobacco
use while there was a small decline among the Hispanics.
31
