<br /> (d) The planning commission shall apply the <br /> following criteria in determining whether to recommend the <br /> proposed change to the city council: <br /> (1) Multiple names along the continuity of a <br /> single street, or along two streets that are in substantial <br /> alignment, shall be avoided. <br /> ( 2) Consideration shall be given to <br /> historical and geographical significance of a street or area <br /> or to the recognition of a significant personal achievement: <br /> (3) A new street name shall not duplicate, or <br /> sound phonetically similar to, the name of a street already <br /> in use in the city or the city's extraterritorial <br /> jurisdiction or designated as a future extension in the <br /> current thoroughfare plan: <br /> (4) A new street name shall not differ from <br /> an existing street name only by the addition of a different <br /> auxiliary designation such as "Avenue," "Way," "Boulevard," <br /> etc: and <br /> (5) The planning commission shall also review <br /> any other pertinent criteria in its consideration of a street <br /> name change. <br /> (e) After the planning commission has considered <br /> the proposed change, its recommendation shall be forwarded to <br /> the city council. <br /> (f) The city council shall hold a public hearing, <br /> and shall apply the criteria described in subsection (d) <br /> above in determining whether to approve the change. Changes <br /> approved by the city council sha II be adopted by separate <br /> ordinance and shall be implemented by the Planning and <br /> Development Services Department. Emergency service agencies <br /> and public utility companies shall be notified of a street <br /> name change. <br /> SECTION 2. That Section B(15) of Article VI, <br /> Appendix C - Subdivisions of the San Marcos Code of <br /> Ordinances is amended to read as follows: <br /> 15. Street names: <br /> (a) New streets in subdivisions shall be named in <br /> a way that will provide continuity of street names and <br /> prevent conflict or confusion with existing street names in <br /> the city, in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction, or in <br /> a neighboring jurisdiction. A proposed new street name is in <br /> conflict with this subsection where: <br /> 1. It duplicates, or sounds phonetically <br /> similar to, the name of a street already in <br /> use within the city or the city's <br /> extraterritorial jurisdiction or designated <br /> as a future extension in the current <br /> thoroughfare plan: <br /> 2. It differs from an existing street name in <br /> the city or the city's extraterritorial <br /> jurisdiction by the addition of an auxiliary <br /> designation such as "Avenue, " "Way," <br /> "Boulevard, II etc.: or <br /> 3. The street to be named is an extension of, <br /> or is in substantial alignment with, an <br /> existing street in the city, the city's <br /> extraterritorial jurisdiction, or a <br /> neighboring jurisdiction and the proposed <br /> street name is different from the existing <br /> street name. <br /> (b) Renaming of existing streets shall be in <br /> accordance with Chapter 25, Sections 25-8 and 25-9 of the <br /> Code of Ordinances. <br />
