STATEMENT OF EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITY TO MANAGE AND OPERATE
Hays county is populated by approximately 60,000 residents. The
area contains one emergency shelter specifically targeting homeless
families and adults, Souths ide Community Center located at 518
South Guadalupe, San Marcos, Texas.
Southside Community Center has been a multi-faceted social service
agency for 65 years. Present programs include a Homeless
Shelter, (assisted over 1800 persons in 1990), Soup Kitchen, Thrift
Shop, Housing Rehabilitation (has received awards from the Senate
of the State of Texas and City of San Marcos), Food Pantry, Youth
Programs and a newly started program for senior citizens.
Throughout the years, the workers at Southside have tried to
correlate their work with the changing and expanding needs of the
community. Our basic philosophy is lito be aware of the constantly
changing needs of the neighborhood and to take responsibility for
meeting such needs through the establishment of direct services or
through cooperative action with other community groups; to provide
experiences leading toward the fulfillment of the individual's and
community's life regardless of age, background, belief or
capabilities; to permeate understanding among varying groups; to
strengthen family life and maintain a close r~lationship with the
neighborhoods.
