As
you are aware, the land is located on the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone and is located adjacent to the
City of San Marcos (City) Purgatory Creek Preserve. In 2001, the Authority assisted the City in
purchasing portions of the Purgatory Creek Preserve in exchange for a conservation easement on that
property.
Preservation of the 289 -acre Purgatory Creek Tract would serve to protect the quality and quantity of
water recharging the Edwards Aquifer. Preserving properties in the area ol'the subject tract also helps
protect the quality of habitat for federally listed endangered aquatic species known to depend on flows
from San Marcos Springs. One federally listed species, the San Marcos Salamander, is known to exist in
two caves, Primers Fissure and Ezels Cave, both located approximately two miles east and down the
groundwater flow gradient from the subject property.
If federal funding is available for preserving the tract, the Authority's board would be interested in
participating in the project as a local partner, possibly providing cooperative funding if available at the
time the grant is approved,
If you have any questions regarding this letter of support, please contact Mr. John Hoyt, P.G., Assistant
General Manager -- Aquifer Management, at (210) 222 -2204.
Since
Karl J. eher
General Manager
cc: Board of Directors, Edwards Aquifer Authority
Ms. Lori Olson, Trust for Public lands
1615 N St. Mary's Street San Antonio, Texas 78215'1415 (210) 222 -2204 (800) 292 -1047
