(e.g. bailers, filtering apparatus). Analysis of this type of
sample for volatile organics verifies decontamination
effectiveness.

Sample handling

Samples will be packaged and delivered to the laboratory in a
way to best preserve the integrity of the samples. Ice chests
will be used as shipping containers. Sample containers will be
placed on ice in insulated coolers. Chain of Custody forms will
be enclosed in each cooler. Transport of samples to the
laboratory will be by hand delivery by MFG sampling personnel.

Chain of Custody forms will be completed in the field at the
time of sample collection. When custody changes, signatures of
personnel regulating the sample exchange will be put on the form
along with the date, time and company affiliation. A signed and
completed copy of the Chain of Custody form will be included in
the final report.

Sample analysis

Water samples will be analyzed in accordance with the guidelines
of EPA SW-846 (Test Methods for Evaluatinq Solid
Waste-Physical/Chemical Methods) third ed., Revised 12/87, EPA
600/4-79-020 (Methods for Chemical Analyses of Water and
Wastes), Revised March 1983, and Standard Methods for the
Examination of Water and Wastewater, 16th ed., 1985. Water
samples will be analyzed in the laboratory for the following
parameters:

1)

General chemistry: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassiu~,
carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, fluoride, nitrate,
phenolphthalein alkalinity (CaC03), alkalinity (CaCO3),
hardness (CaC03), chloride, pH, specific conductance, and
total dissolved solids (TDS).

2)
3)

Total organic carbon (TOC).

Trace metals: arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper,
iron, lead, manganese, mercury, selenium, silver, and
zinc.

4)

Volatile organic compounds: Priority Pollutant List (40
CFR 122).

A laboratory quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) program
will be employed to ensure the analytical accuracy and
precision. The program will consist of a series of laboratory
duplicates and spiked samples that will be analyzed at the same
time as the original field samples. The results of these
analyses and comprehensive QA/QC reporting will be provided by

8
