<br /> BUILDINGS: <br /> Definition: A building, such as a house, barn, church, hotel, or similar <br /> construction is created to shelter any form of human activity. Building may also <br /> be used to refer to a historically and functionally related unit, such as a <br /> courthouse and jailor a house and barn. Examples to document include: <br /> 1) Notable examples of architectural styles and periods or methods of <br /> construction, as well as particular local or regional types. <br /> 2) Buildings illustrating the history and development of such diverse areas <br /> as communications, community planning, government, conservation, <br /> economics, education, literature, music, and landscape architecture. <br /> 3) Stores and businesses and other properties that provide a physical <br /> record of the experiences of particular ethnic groups. <br /> 4) Markets and commercial structures or blocks. <br /> 5) Buildings by great architects or master builders and important works <br /> by minor ones. <br /> 6) Architectural curiosities, buildings which are one-of-a-kind. <br /> 7) Sole or rare survivors of an important architectural style or type. <br /> 8) Studios of American artists, writers, or musicians during the years of <br /> significant activity. <br /> 9) Institutions that provide evidence of the cultural history of a <br /> community, such as churche~, universities, art centers, theaters, <br /> and entertainment halls. <br /> 10) Buildings where significant technological advances or inventions in any <br /> field occurred (agricultural experiment stations, laboratories, etc.). <br /> 11) Vernacular or folk buildings, including secondary or outbuildings. <br /> 12) A few interiors of buildings that retain significant features. <br /> SITES: <br /> Defini tion: A site is the location of a significant event, a prehistoric or <br /> historic occupation or activity, or a building or structure, whether standing, <br /> ruined, or vanished, where the location itself possesses historical, cultural, or <br /> archeological value regardless of the value of any existing structure. <br /> 1) Archeological sites containing information that may be of value in <br /> answering particular research questions. <br /> 2) Archeological sites containing information that may shed light on broad <br /> trends in local, state, or national history. <br /> 3) Sites of cultural importance to local people or ethnic groups, such as <br /> locations of important events in their history, historic or prehistoric <br /> cemeteries, or shrines. <br /> 4) Sites associated with events important in the history of the community <br /> as a whole, such as battlefields, trails, etc. <br /> 5) Cemeteries associated with important events or people, or whose study <br /> can provide important information about history or prehistory, or <br /> landscape significance. <br /> 6) Ruins of historically or archeologically important buildings or <br /> structures <br /> 7) Historically important shipwrecks. <br /> 8) Cemeteries important for the architectural or artistic qualities of their <br /> constituent structures and monuments. [Cemeteries are important cultural <br /> properties to survey, but usually are ineligible for inclusion in the <br /> National Register of Historic Places.] <br /> 2 <br />
