<br />RESOLUTION NO. 2007 - 168 R <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCil OF THE CITY OF <br />SAN MARCOS, TEXAS, SUPPORTING lEGISLATIVE <br />ACTION TO PROVIDE FUNDING AND PROGRAMS TO <br />INCREASE THE AVAilABiliTY OF AFFORDABLE <br />HOUSING <br /> <br />WHEREAS, over 420/0 of Texas families have incomes less than 300Jb of the area <br />median family income; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, over two-thirds of the working poor live in substandard housing; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, more than 110,000 low-income elderly households live in <br />substandard housing; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, according to federal standards "affordable housing" means that a <br />household should pay no more than 300/0 of its income for housing; <br /> <br />WHEREAS, under the affordable housing standard it takes 87 hours of minimum <br />wage work per weed to afford a modest two bedroom apartment in Texas; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Texas ranks ninth worst nationally in the percent of households with <br />children confronting high housing costs, overcrowding, and lack of complete plumbing <br />or kitchen facilities; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, five out of six low income Texas families who qualify for <br />governmental housing assistance do not receive it because of the shortage of <br />subsidized housing in Texas; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, over the last five years the cost of housing construction has <br />increased at a pace faster than the increase in salary. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFOR BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS: <br /> <br />PART 1. The City Council of City of San Marcos, Texas, supports legislative <br />action that would create and fund programs that would increase the availability of <br />affordable housing in Texas. <br /> <br />PART 2. This Resolution is in full force and effect from and after its passage. <br />
