RESOLUTION NO. 2018-171R <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN <br /> MARCOS, TEXAS DECLARING THE SECOND MONDAY OF <br /> OCTOBER OF EVERY YEAR HEREAFTER AS 'INDIGENOUS <br /> PEOPLES' DAY" IN RECOGNITION OF THE CULTURAL AND <br /> FOUNDATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE TO <br /> THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE <br /> DATE. <br /> RECITALS: <br /> 1. WHEREAS, the area known as Spring Lake located in the City of San <br /> Marcos is one the longest continually inhabited sites in North America and was <br /> home to many different groups, bands, and tribes of Indigenous Peoples for at <br /> least 13,000 years; and <br /> 2. WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples' Day was first proposed in 1977 by a <br /> delegation of Native Nations to the United Nations sponsored International <br /> Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas; <br /> and <br /> 3. WHEREAS, the City of San Marcos recognizes and values the vast <br /> contributions made to our community through Indigenous Peoples' knowledge, <br /> science, philosophy, arts and culture and through these contributions the City of <br /> San Marcos has developed and thrived. <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, <br /> TEXAS: <br /> PART 1. The City of San Marcos celebrates and honors the cultural and <br /> foundational contributions of Indigenous People to our history,past,present and future. <br /> PART 2. The second Monday of October of every year hereafter is hereby declared <br /> "Indigenous Peoples' Day" in the City of San Marcos. <br /> PART 3. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately from and <br /> after its passage. <br /> ADOPTED on September 18, 2018. <br />
