RESOLUTION NO. 2018-171R A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS DECLARING THE SECOND MONDAY OF OCTOBER OF EVERY YEAR HEREAFTER AS 'INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY" IN RECOGNITION OF THE CULTURAL AND FOUNDATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE TO THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. RECITALS: 1. WHEREAS, the area known as Spring Lake located in the City of San Marcos is one the longest continually inhabited sites in North America and was home to many different groups, bands, and tribes of Indigenous Peoples for at least 13,000 years; and 2. WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples' Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of Native Nations to the United Nations sponsored International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas; and 3. WHEREAS, the City of San Marcos recognizes and values the vast contributions made to our community through Indigenous Peoples' knowledge, science, philosophy, arts and culture and through these contributions the City of San Marcos has developed and thrived. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS: PART 1. The City of San Marcos celebrates and honors the cultural and foundational contributions of Indigenous People to our history,past,present and future. PART 2. The second Monday of October of every year hereafter is hereby declared "Indigenous Peoples' Day" in the City of San Marcos. PART 3. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect immediately from and after its passage. ADOPTED on September 18, 2018.
