The Mayor read a letter from J.M, Owens, Assistant
District 14 Engineer for the Texas Highway Department, which
accompanied a report on the Department's traffic survey in
San Marcos, Easter Week. The letter was made a part of the
May 8 Minutes. The most controversial item in the report was
that traffic lights were not warranted at any intersection
in San Marcos, exeept the four on Guadalupe Street. The City
Manager said the plan .for new traffic lights cal led for a
coordinated system of late design, and was not based on an
individual corner basis. Mr. Whittenberg said when bonds were
voted, it ,vas the hope of the Counc j I that new lights cou I d be
instal led in al I present locations; not to decrease .the number
of lights, but, if anything, to increase the number. He said
he would like to go on record as opposing the elimination of
any lights on LBJ Drive, Colorado or Hopkins.

I

The Mayor asked Mr. Owens to explain the survey, and a
question and answer period followed, with full discussion
between Highway Engineers, signal light engineers, Councilmen
and citizens. The merits and disadvantages of one-way streets
and paral lei parking were among the aspects of the problem
discussed.

Mr. Whittenberg moved that none of the present street lights
be abolished. Dr. Pool seconded the motion and on 1"01 I cal I

the following vote was recorded:

AYE:
NAY:

Flores, Korff, Pool, Serur, Whittenberg
None

The Mayor declared the motion carried.
