<br /> 67 <br /> RESOLUTION 1991- 156 R <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br /> OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE <br /> INITIATION OF A FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR A <br /> REGIONAL AIRPORT SERVING THE AUSTIN-SAN <br /> ANTONIO CORRIDOR AREA: AND DECLARING AN <br /> EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> WHEREAS, the Federal Aviation Administration and the <br /> cities of Austin and San Antonio are considering spending <br /> substantial public fund s to construct or expand new or <br /> existing commercial airports to meet current and future air <br /> transportation needs in South Central Texas: and, <br /> WHEREAS, the population of the Austin-San Antonio <br /> Corridor now represents over three million persons and in <br /> 199Ø generated combined enplanements and deplanements of <br /> almost ten million passengers: and, <br /> WHEREAS, the two cities are approximately 7Ø miles apart <br /> and are proposed to be linked together by the proposed Texas <br /> TGV IIBullet Trainll in a travel time of approximately 32 <br /> minutes: and, <br /> WHEREAS, the provision of direct air service to other <br /> parts of the nation and world at a regional airport would <br /> greatly enhance the continued economic development of Austin <br /> as a high-technology center and San Antonio as an emerging <br /> bio-medical center and the gateway for free trade with Mexico <br /> and Latin America: <br /> WHEREAS, the safety of air travelers can be <br /> significantly improved and the cost to taxpayers can be <br /> greatly reduced by combining airport resources within the <br /> Austin-San Antonio Corridor: now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN <br /> MARCOS, TEXAS: <br /> PART 1. That the support of the City is hereby exposed <br /> to U.S. Representatives Henry B. Gonzalez, J.J. Pickle, Greg <br /> Laughlin and Lamar Smith and to U.S. Senators Lloyd Bentsen <br /> and Phil Gramm to request that the Federal Aviation <br /> Administration initiate a study of the feasibility of a <br /> Regional Airport to serve the Austin-San Antonio Corridor. <br /> PART 2.
