Froh <br />Visitors: Mrs. Jerri Veidt and Bob Kerchev i II e <br /> <br />The Mayor cal led the meeting to order at 4;30 p.m. Members <br />of the Counci I signed "Consent to Meeting". <br /> <br />Alderman Pool read aloud the fol lowing Resolution and <br />moved its approval: <br /> <br />"WHEREAS, Lyndon Baines Johnson is a former resident <br />of San Marcos, and was a student at Southwest Texas <br />State College; and, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />"WHEREAS, the City of San Marcos considers it a singu- <br />lar honor to list this distinguished Texan as a resi- <br />dent and student, and wishes to recognize his service <br />to his country and his leadership in world affairs; <br /> <br />"NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Counci I of <br />the City of San Marcos, Texas, that Austin Street, <br />from Interstate 35 North to the City Limits, be re- <br />named LYNDON B. JOHNSON DRIVE. " <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Alderman Damon seconded the motion. Alderman Whittenberg <br />said: "I think there wil I be a few people who wi I I not like <br />the change, but inasmuch as Mr. Johnson is President of the <br />United States, was a student at Southwest Texas State, and <br />has done so much for San Marcos, I feel this is a proper <br />move; and I would like to have this statement in the Minutes". <br />Alderman Damon said: "As time goes on, we should make Lyndon <br />B. Johnson Drive an attractive street, in keeping with the <br />dignity of the name. Of course, this improvement would have <br />to be subject to the property-owners, but perhaps if the City <br />Counci I took the lead, and the Chamber of Commerce would en- <br />courage the plan, something could be done." The Mayor express- <br />ed himself in favor of the plan to change the name of the street. <br />and read aloud a note from Alderman Froh, who -was unavoid- <br />ably absent from the meeting. Mr. Froh said, in part: <br />"I wish to tel I the Counci I that I am 100 % in favor of chang- <br />ing the name of Austin Street to Lyndon B. Johnson Drive, and <br />regret that I cannot be there in person to vote 'Aye'".
