The Mayor reviewed the problem that had arisen
concerning the amount of base material used at two intersections in
Victory Gardens. The reason for the lesser amount of base material in
these two areas was because of the drainage problem. He stated that
the inspector for the City at the time gave the Contractor the go ahead
to lessen the amount of base material used. In a meeting this morning
between the contractor, City Manager, Acting Public Works Director, Mr.
Jim Byrn, Council Member John Stokes and the Mayor, the contractor agreed
to go back to these two areas and see that the quality of the streets will
be maintained at no expense to the City. Mr. Stokes said that the
contractor stated that it would have cost an additional $100,000 to lower
the utility lines in the area to conform to the contract. The City has
retained a local engineer to oversee that proper amounts of asphalt are
placed in these areas. Mr. James asked if the engineer was going to be
an additional expense to the City. Mr. Stokes said he would on an hourly
basis only. The City Manager said that an inspector
had been hired on a temporary basis and would start work on Tuesday of
next week.
