<br />GENERAL INFORMATION REGARDING CITY AND ITS ECONOMY <br /> <br />Location and Population <br />The City of San Marcos is the County Seat and principal commercial, educational and recreational center <br />of Hays County located in the center of the State of Texas in the Austin statistical metropolitan area, <br />approximately midway between the metropolitan areas of San Antonio and Austin, the State Capitol. The annual total precipitation is 35.6 inches. <br />Rainfall occurs in late spring and early fall. The mean length of the growing season (without freeze) is <br />254 days. San Marcos receives about 26% of the total possible sunshine annually. <br /> <br />~unicipal Government <br />The City has a Council-Manager form of government with seven councilmembers. City Master plan, <br />Zoning Ordinances and Planning Commission are established. Thirty-three (33) city policemen, and <br />sixteen (16) county sheriff patrolmen; four (/I) fire stations manned by twenty-four (24) regular firemen <br />and thirty-four (34) volunteer firemen. MunicipalJy operated ambulance service with emergency medical <br />technicians. San Marcos is transversed by Interstate Highway 35 (North and South System) and is 20 <br />miles from Interstate 10 (East and West System). Also, connecting the City to the state are State <br />Highways 21, 80, 123 and Ranch Road 12. <br /> <br />Rail. . . Missouri Pacific - eighteen daily freight trains; Amtrack <br />Missouri-Kansas- Texas - six dally freight trains with one freight terminal. <br /> <br />Air. . . San Marcos Municipal Airport is operated by the City and consists of four runways and six <br />taxiways, all in good condition and able to accommodate most kinds of aircraft. Charter plane service is <br />available. Austin Municipal Airport, located 28 miles north of San Marcos, has commercial airline service <br />with ten different carriers.
