REGIONAL DATA <br />Hays County and San Marcos are located in the center of the Estate of <br />Texas, approximately mid-way between Austin and San Antonio on I1-1-35. <br />In addition to IH-35, San Marcos is crossed by State Highways 123, 80, and <br />21. San Marcos is centrally located in the I1-1-35 growth corridor. The <br />population of San Marcos is estimated at 35,000, with a growth rate since <br />1950 of approximately 4.25%. The median age of the population is 24.3 <br />years. <br />Southwest Texas State University, a state university with an <br />enrollment of over 20,000 students, brings to the region an abundance of <br />educational, recreational, and service opportunities. Also <br />available in San Marcos are railroad, taxi, and motor freight services. <br />San Marcos recently purchased electric utility facilities from the <br />Lower Colorado River Authority. The city also provides sewage treatment <br />facilities. Entex is the major source of natural gas in San Marcos.
