<br />, <br /> <br />tI <br /> <br />J <br /> <br />Chapter 1 Development Procedures - Article 9 Construction Permits <br /> <br />Division 5: Sign Permit <br /> <br />Section 1.9.5.1 <br /> <br />Purpose, Applicability, Exceptions and Effect <br /> <br />(a) Purpose. The purpose of a sign permit is to authorize the display, erection, <br />rebuilding, restructuring, expansion, relocation, or structural alteration of any on- <br />premise or off-premise sign. <br /> <br />(b) Applicability. A sign permit is required within the City limits for on-premise and off- <br />premise signs, and for off-premise signs in the City's extraterritorial jurisdiction. <br /> <br />(1) On-premise signs to be located in a historic district or at a historic landmark <br />shall first receive approval for a Certificate of Appropriateness authorizing the <br />activity under Article 5, Division 6 of this Chapter 1 before an application for <br />a sign permit may be decided. <br /> <br />(2) Electrical permits under the electrical code in the City's code of ordinances <br />are also required for electric signs, except those designed to be plugged into <br />an existing electric outlet. <br /> <br />(c) Exemptions. The following signs and activities do not require a sign permit: <br /> <br />(1) Signs not visible from the nearest public street toward which they are <br />oriented. <br /> <br />(2) Temporary window displays consisting of merchandise or posters. <br /> <br />(3) National, state or other governmental flags up to 60 square feet in area. <br /> <br />(4) Balloons not exceeding 36 inches in greatest dimension. <br /> <br />(5) On-premises directional signs, except on properties zoned single-family or <br />duplex, up to four square feet in area and up to four feet in height. Only two <br />of these signs may be used on each street frontage of a premise. <br /> <br />(6) Unlighted letters, numbers or symbols up to 24 inches in height that form an <br />architectural detail of a building. <br /> <br />(7) Signs facing the interior of athletic stadiums or fields or facing the exterior of <br />athletic stadiums or fields operated by nonprofit organizations or <br />governmental entities. <br /> <br />(8) Unlit signs up to 32 square feet in area, on the premises of a governmental, <br />religious, educational or other noncommercial institution, which function <br />solely as community information signs. <br /> <br />City of San Marcos, Texas <br /> <br />1-143 <br /> <br />Land Development Code - Final <br />
