City of Amarillo, Texas
Don Cates, Director of Finance Development of a Long-Range
(806) 378-3000 Data Processing Plan
The City of Amarillo, Texas, opera tes a DOSjVSE computer center for all city
applications, except Municipal Court (IBM System 34) and Police (IBM System 38). Four
years ago the City accepted the low-bid for computer hardware from National Advanced
Systems for an N.A.S. 5000 (IBM 4341 look-alike). Since then, the City has experienced
numerous and consistent hardware problems. All of the City's application software has
been developed in-house except their comprehensive financial system, LG.F.S., which was
purchased from American Management System.
The objectives of this study were to:
- Evaluate the current data processing applications and data processing
division.
- Determine the information needs of the City and the user's level of
satisfaction with data processing.
- Develop a realistic, cost effective, long-range data processing plan that
includes:
- Use of micro-computers and office automation.
- Distributive systems versus continuance of a centralized, mainframe
computer center (Le., use of System 38's in tax, utility billing,
finance, etc. versus use of an IBM mainframe).
The study has been successfully completed and L WFW's recommendations accepted by City
Management.
City of Wichita Falls,Texas Development of a Long-Range
Ed Barrett, Assistant City Manager Data Processing Plan and
(817) 322-5611 Evaluation of the City's MIS Function
LWFW, Inc. Group was selected to conduct a project for developing a long-range data
processing plan and to evaluate the City's MIS function. During this engagement, LWFW
consultants:
- Identified the City's information needs.
11
