At the present time, there exists approximately 49 contiguous acres of
land available for the future airport facilities development within
existing airport boundaries. The area includes that currently
utilized for aircraft parking, fixed base operations, maintenance and
T-hanqarS. However, it should be noted that, of the approximately 49
acres of available space, 30.3 acres consist of aircraft parking
apra1. Although the aircraft apron area can be effectively utilized
for aviation support activities (such as c:xmstruction of T-hangars),
the aircraft parking aprons are in good condition and are generally
0CI18idered to be a valuable resource which should not be used unless
no other alternative exists. For that reason, it is recommended that
general aviation facilities be a:mstructed in areas where there is no
existing paving, or where facilities can be built i.mmedi.ately adjacent
to the existing aircraft parking' apron.

Additiooally, it is recommended that procedures be initiated to begin
acquiring land and aircraft parking apron from Gary Job Corps for
intermediate and long term airport uses. This recommendation is
consistent with previous studies, and will be discussed in the
sections of this report n-1:inq with land use alternatives.

Aizcraft PaJ:ki.Dq and Jllu9r ~ 1 itie8

General aviation aircraft parking is divided into two categories:
short-term parking (itinerant) and long-term parking (based).
Itinerant aircraft will require short-term parking, perhaps for a
period no longer than to refuel or for several hours, while business
is beinq conducted. 'lbese parking areas are best located near facili-
ties which the pilots and passengers would likely use, such as flight
planning facilities, automobile rentals, etc. For that reason,
parking spaces for itinerant aircraft should be reserved near the
terminal building within an easy walk of these facilities. Additional
short-term parking should be provided with tie-downs and be
immediately accessible to fuel trucks and other service vehicles.

Long-term/based aircraft parking is customarily provided to park
aircraft which will remain em the airport for a substantial amount of
time, or for owners of aircraft who wish to avoid the expense of
hangar rental. These spaces must be provided with tie-downs and
sha1ld be located away from high-act! vity areas ~ however, they must be
secure and not subject to vandalism, theft, etc. Long-term parking
may be included in a fixed base operations (FBO) lease agreement, and
the responsibility for administering and managing the parking facili-
ties ocW.d be with the operator or leasee.

3.7
