The Extensive Research of the SWT Student Group

Contact:

Dana Butler at 392-0275

We are a group of Southwest Texas State University

students enrolled in the Speech Communication course 2330,

discussion.

The course is conducted by Dr. B.J. Hilgendorf.

The delays of emergency vehicles by the train was brought

to Mr. Hilgendorf's attention by the secretary of the speech

communication department, a long-time resident of San Marcos.

The problem was presented to the class members and the seven

members of this group chose to work on this important pro-

blem.

We feel our efforts can help highteen public awareness

about a problem that today is very dangerous.

We began our research by evaluating possible solutions

for the vehicle/train delay problem.

We concluded that

possible solutions are:

an overpass, a trauma center, a

depot outside of the city limits or a helicopter.

Our research concerning the overpass has shown that it

is not feasible at present to construct an overpass due to

cost, time and building regulations limitations.

In an interview with A.C. Gonzales the San Marcos City

Manager, we were informed that the estimated cost for the

overpass is approximately $3 million.

The city or state

could find such a project but funds are not available.

Daniel Brown, a former city councilman, informed us

that this problem had been discussed in prior city council
