Page 1
CITY San Marcos

Narrative
1. What does your community expect to achieve from the Main Street Project?
The citizens of San Marcos expect to achieve the revitali-
zation of the sluggish downtown economy, and the preser-
vation of the historic buildings located there from the
Main Street Project. Although this area of the city still
houses the Hays County offices, there is the desparate need
for assistance in retail marketing and management to pro-
vide a shopping and services district for the employees
of these offices, as well as the citizens of San Marcos and
Hays County. As the buildings are restored, and the exist-
ing businesses are strenghthened, the area will become
attractive for new businesses to fulfill the needs of the
downtown area, such as restaurants, department stores,
specialty shops, etc. Through this revitalization, a new
sense of pride will be established in the shops and offices,
and the Central Business District will once again be
attractive and vibrant. The outcome of the Main Street Pro-
ject will be the provision of a much needed sense of identity
for the citizens of San Marcos.
2. What other groups do you expect to support the project? How have you informed other
groups and citizens about the project? Have you held public meetings to discuss applying for
Main Street designation? What private funds are available to support the Main Street
Project? Do you have a Main Street Committee? Do you already have a Main Street
manager?
During the last three years, there has been a steady flow
of press releases and photographs concerning the Main Street
Project, along with presentations to many of the service
clubs in town by the Project Manager. This publicity has
bolstered support for the project, and has exhibited the
successes of the project thus far. The Main Street Coali-
tion members, who are responsible for establishing the
project in San Marcos, has met each year to discuss the
goals and objectives of the project for the corning year.
The Project Manager was hired in January of 1984, and has
attended the January Training Conference in Austin for the
last two years. Certain aspects of the project are being
considered for private funding by the Heritage Association
of San Marcos.
