<br />GENERAL INFORMATION REGARDING CITY AND ITS ECONOMY <br /> <br />Location and Population <br /> <br />The City of San Marcos is the County Seat of Hays County located in the center of the State of <br />Texas, approximately Inidway between the metropolitan areas of San Antonio and Austin, the State <br />Capitol. The City is located on Interstate Highway 35, U.S. Highway 81, State Highways 80, <br />142, 21, 123 and Ranch Road 12. <br /> <br />The City encompasses an area of 14.02 square miles with a September, 1985 population estimated <br />at 33,345, up from a 1980 Census of 22,230. The annual total precipitation is <br />35.6 inches. Rainfall occurs in late spring and early fall. The mean length of the growing <br />season (without freeze) is 254 days. San Marcos receives about 26% of the total possible <br />sunshine annually. The average January temperature is 65 degrees. <br /> <br />Municipal Government <br /> <br />Council-Manager form of government with seven council members. City Master plan, Zoning <br />Ordinances and Planning Commission are established. Thirty-two (32) city policemen, and <br />sixteen (16) county sheriff patrolmen; four (4) fire stations manned by twenty-four (24) <br />regular firemen and thirty-four (34) volunteer firemen. Municipally operated ambulance service <br />with emergency medical technicians.
