<br /> 83 <br /> ORDINANCE 1984-25 <br /> AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br /> SAN MARCOS, TEXAS, AMENDING CHAPTER 2 OF THE CODE <br /> OF ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF SAN MARCOS, TEXAS, BY <br /> ADDING AN ARTICLE TO BE NUMBERED VIII TO SAID <br /> CHAPTER 2 PROVIDING FOR THE CREATION OF A <br /> COMMISSION FOR MINORITIES; PROVIDING FOR THE <br /> COMPOSITION AND APPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS OF SUCH <br /> COMMISSION AND THE FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF SUCH <br /> COMMISSION AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Marcos, <br />Texas recognizes the necessity of having an advisory board to <br />aid in meeting the needs and problems of minorities in the <br />San Marcos area; and, <br /> WHEREAS, there is a necessity for the involvement and <br />participation of the citizens of this community in order to <br />attain the goal outlined above; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN <br />MARCOS, TEXAS: <br /> SECTION I. That Chapter 2 of the Code of Ordinances of <br />the City of San Marcos, Texas, be amended to add an Article <br />to be numbered VIII and entitled "Commission For Minorities" <br />to read as follows: <br /> ARTICLE VIII. <br /> COMMISSION FOR MINORITIES <br /> Sec. 2-130. For the purposes of this article, the <br /> word "minority" shall mean: a person who <br /> is a citizen or lawful permanent resident <br /> of the United states and who is: <br /> ( a) Black (a person having origins in any of the <br /> black racial groups of Africa) <br /> (b) Hispanic (a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, <br /> Cuban, Central or South American, or other <br /> Spanish culture or origin, regardless of <br /> race) <br /> ( c) Portuguese ( a person of Portuguese, <br /> Brazilian, or other Portuguese culture or <br /> origin, regardless of race) <br /> (d) Asian American (a person having origins in <br /> any of the original peoples of the Far East, <br /> Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, or <br /> the Pacific Islands); or <br /> ( e) American Indian and Alaskan Native (a person <br /> having origins in any of the original peoples <br /> of North America) <br /> Sec. 2-131. Composition; appointment of members. <br /> There is hereby established the Commission For <br /> Minorities. Such Commission shall be composed of <br /> seven (7) citizens of the City of San Marcos, <br /> appointed by the City Council, who are willing to <br /> pursue a positive course of action for achieving <br /> equal rights and responsibilities for all <br /> minorities and through their activities have <br /> demonstrated their commitment to this goal.
