- 2 -
ATTACHMENT "A", Page 9
TORNADOS
Situated thirty miles South of Austin at the edge of the foothills
about 140 miles from the coast, on the Coastal Plains, we are
susceptible to tornados from an alley between Austin and Houston
and also tornados which spin off from hurricanes on the coast.
We have been the recipient of two ( 2) small tornados in the last
five (5) years totaling damages of approximately two ( 2) million
dollars.
During the Spring months, we are under tornado watches many days
and nights each year.
HURRICANES
In the last five (5) years, being 140 miles from the coast, we
have felt the effects of Hurricane Allen, when we put up 6,000
refugees and Hurricane Alicia, 130 refugees. Due to the distance
of 140 miles, we experienced winds from the coast of about 60 MPH.
However, we experience heavy rains and spin-off tornados from
hurricanes in this area.
HIGH PRESSURE GAS LINE BLÅ’^l OUTS
In San Marcos, we have one gas line heading into our City from
Staples (4 inch line) to a plant where a small amount is scented
and supplies the City, then leaves the City through an eight inch
ma1n.
We have had a ruptured line on one occasion in the last two years.
This system belongs to ENTEX GAS COMPANY and is under 350 PSI.
EARTHQUAKES
Situated at the edge of the Balcones Fault, there 1S a remote
possibility of minor activity. Historically, the only measurable
tremors felt in this area were at Pleasanton in February, 1984
which measured 3.6 on the Rictor Scale.
AIRCRAFT ACCIDENTS
The possibility of an aircraft accident is always present. While
the municipal airport does not have much traffic, major airlines do
pass over our City both North and South and East and West.
CIVIL UNREST
Civil unrest is highly improbable. Our major threat would be from
demonstrations from University students (18,000 enrolled). Union
activity or racial problems in the last five years has been non-
existent.
