<br /> ATTACHMENT "A", Page 3 <br /> CITY OF SAN MARCOS HAZARD/VULNERABILITY ANALYSIS <br /> GENERAL DESCRIPTION <br /> The City of San Marcos is primarily a college and industrial <br /> community of approximately 43,000 people. <br /> POPULATION <br /> The City sits on the edge of the Edward's Aquifer. 33 miles <br /> South of Auston on U. S. Interstate Highway 35 at 630 N.S.L. <br /> East edge of the Balcones Fault, with Hill country to West and <br /> North, the watersheds from Devil's Backbone draining from 180 <br /> degrees into downtown area via Willow Creek, West, Purgatory <br /> Creek from North, Sink Springs and Blanco River from East. <br /> The Coastal Plains from East to South is higher than the downtown <br /> area making the City of San Marcos highly susceptible to flash <br /> flooding. <br /> GOVERNMENT <br /> The City of San Marcos is governed by a City Council which is <br /> the administrative body. The Council consists of six (6) Council <br /> Members plus a Mayor, with the City Manager as Administrator. <br /> TRANSPORTATION <br /> Highways <br /> The City has U. S. Interstate Highway 35 which runs North and <br /> South. State Highway 123 which runs into the City and intersects <br /> with Interstate 35. State Highway 80 which intersects with State <br /> Highway 21, going East, and State Ranch Road 12 going '¡-Jest. <br /> Railroads <br /> The Missouri-Kansas-Texas and Missouri Pacific Railways with two <br /> ( 2) tracks running North and South from San Antonio to Dallas. <br /> There are also four (4) Amtrak passenger trains and freight trains <br /> DAILY. <br /> MAJOR INDUSTRY <br /> The Kroger Warehouse, National Supply Company, International <br /> Electric, Gulf Business Forms, Mensor Corporation, Thermon, Inc., <br /> Formsprag which are at the Southern edge of the City. The Butler <br /> Manufacturing Company and Tex-Trirn Molding are located at the <br /> North edge of the City. <br />
