PART IV
PROGRAM NARRATIVE
The City of San Marcos is served by a single, 10,660 square foot library
which was constructed in 1966. Though originally designed to house a collection
of 30,000 volumes, the library now houses a collection of over 37,000 books
in addition to a variety of special collections, audio-visual materials and equipment
which require special shelving and space allocations. In addition to the growth
of the library collection, the library staff has grown in size from three members
in 1967 to eleven members (8.05 FTE's) in 1983. As a result of the growth in
these two areas, the library is now faced with a critical shortage of reader space,
shelving space and work space.
In a recently adopted City of San Marcos Master Plan, one of the City's stated
objectives is to expand the central library located in the downtown area at
310 W. Hutchison Street. The expansion would provide additional stack areas,
work space, a quiet study area and an area designed for the use of audio-visual
and computer hardware.
There are several possible options for expanding the library. One option currently
under consideration is to add a two story structure which would be built adjacent
to the existing library on a vacant, city-owned strip of property. Such expansion
would add 12,400 square feet of floor space to the building. This would bring
the total number of square feet in the building up to 23,060, thus meeting
Wheeler and Goldhor's minimum space standards for public libraries serving
38,442 people. (In Texas Public Library Statistics for 1981, the population
served by the San Marcos Public Library is estimated by the Texas State
Library to be 33,267.)
It is the City's intention to fund the library expansion project by applying
for $100,000 in LSCA, Title II, funds and matching these with $450,000 in
revenue generated by the sale of bonds. The availability of federal funds will
provide the incentive to move rapidly on this important project and will also
provide the necessary funding to hire a I ibrary building consultant and to furnish
the addition to the library. Thus, LSCA funds would insure that the city would
have a high quality, fully usable library upon completion of the building project.
An estimated timetable for the proposed building project may be found on the
next page.
The state senator and representative serving this area are:
Senator Lloyd Doggett Representative Bob Barton
P.O.
