Phone 512/392-8124
MEMO
TO: Mayor Morris and Members of the City Council
FROM: Members of the Library Board
SUBJECT: Semi-Annual Report to the Council
DATE: July 18, 1989
------------------------------------------------------------
City ordinance (section 15-26) calls for the Library Board to
make semi-annual reports to the City Council. It has been
some time since we have done this, but we are pleased now to
report to you some recent highlights and concerns with regard
to our public library.
USE OF THE LIBRARY:
Use of our library has grown by approximately 20% annually in
recent years. Not only are people using the library more,
but more and more different people use the library every
year. This year approximately 11,250 people will sign up for
library cards. This is a 13% increase over the number of
borrowers registered last year.
People are using the library in a wide variety of ways. Of
course they are borrowing books, but they are also coming to
the library for films, videos, records, cassettes, art
prints, audiovisual equipment, periodicals, and local history
materials. This year over 240,000 items will be borrowed
from the library collection. Approximately 16,000 people
will use the library's reference and interlibrary loan
services this year. Attendance for the library's summer
reading program and other children's programs will climb to
over 7,000. Adults will attend tutoring sessions and other
library sponsored programs over 6,500 times during the year.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE LIBRARY COLLECTION:
The library collection grows by approximately 4,500 items
each year and now includes a total of 60,650 books and 3,400
non-book materials. While the collection continues to grow
in both breadth and depth, it still falls short of state and
national standards for communities of our size. We have
approximately 1.7 books per capita as compared to the
American Library Association standard of two books per
capita.
