Historical Context is important <br />Though San Marcos is known for the San Marcos <br />River, Texas State University, and the San Marcos <br />Outlet Malls, the City also has an extensive history <br />that dates back to pre-European times. Archaeology <br />shows that the area around Spring Lake has been <br />continuously inhabited for over 13,000 years. <br />destroyed the civil settlement of San Marcos de <br />1812 <br />The land that was once part of the Spanish land <br />grant becomes what is known today as San Marcos. <br />Juan Martin de Veramendi becomes colonial <br />1832 <br />governor. <br />and mills. <br />1835 <br />On March 1, 1848, Hays County was organized by <br />the Texas Legislature. San Marcos was selected as <br />the county seat.
