City should keep hiring employees like them. Another letter regarding planning was
received stating that the process in place has improved, and they should get high marks.
The last letter was from US Canoe and Kayak thanking the City for their support of
competition this weekend. Mayor Narvaiz also thanked those that came out and
participated and those that watched along the river. It was a great experience. It was a
lot of work, and there were many wonderful volunteers. The Mayor noted that this could
set up new things for Economic Development with athletic competitions on this level.
She also reported that at the CAPCOG meeting last week, VOCA funds continue to be
cut. Ten counties will get 30% less funds, and she anticipates that the Women's Shelter
will receive 30% less funds. This translates to over $500,000 and puts more pressure on
local municipal governments. She reported that she has been asked to serve on the TML
Eminent Domain and Regulations Committee and will begin serving on that committee in
May.
Gaylord Bose reported that 3.5 years ago he began to serve on the Community Action
Committee. The Head Start program was just recently audited, and there were no
negative comments. The honesty and integrity of these people should be deeply
applauded. They were also asked to help with a training program in Dallas.
Councilmember Bose also thanked everyone for the flowers, cards and visits he received
after his cancer surgery. He strongly recommended that all men get an annual physical,
especially if they are over 45 years old. He reported that the Cattle Baron Ball is March
29, and the Relay for Life is in April.
Daniel Guerrero noted that he and the Mayor are also cancer survivors and
recommended that people should get an annual exam by age 30. He reported that he had
the opportunity today to read to some children at the San Marcos Childhood
Development Center. In response to earlier remarks, he agreed that we do need to think
outside the box. To think outside the box, we need to step outside the box. He has done
several ride - alongs, stepping outside this room and seeing what is going on from 10 p.m.
to 5 a.m. and seeing the reality of what is going on. He reminded staff that an item for
EMS will be on the agenda for March 3, and the presentation on the jump drive will be
modified. He asked that everyone review this in preparation because the stakeholders
need to provide feedback.
Pam Couch followed up on the letter shared by the Mayor. She stated that she went to
see a small business, and they said to give kudos to the permitting center because
everyone went the extra mile.
Chris Jones reported that he and the Mayor had attended the Black History Awards
banquet. San Marcos received two awards honoring MLK Street and the Dunbar Center.
He encouraged the community to learn why streets are named what they are; there are
many histories behind the name. He thanked the Dunbar Heritage Commission for their
work on the event. He also thanked the Texas State students for stepping up to the plate
and putting their money where their mouths are for moving to Division 1 Bowl series.
He challenged the council to see if they could make a commitment (like the students did)
as we prepare for growth. He also encouraged council to think about our social services.
PDFConvert.2505.1.RM021908 Minutes.doc
