City Council Meeting Minutes August 17, 2021
Council Member Gonzales inquired about discussions with Texas State and if
there is an option to partner with them. Mr. Stewart stated is not aware of any
programs that Texas State is pushing at this time, but this is something the
City can look into.
Council Member Baker expressed his appreciation to staff for bringing this
item forward. He inquired about Texas State's fiber optics and do they have
some already. He thinks the City should take some ownership in the internet
connectivity realm to ensure internet access is provided to all citizens.
Council Member Gleason expressed his appreciation to staff for the
information presented. He would like to see alternative options reviewed in an
effort to expand services throughout the community.
Council Member Garza stated the school district did have family members ask
for extra hot spots and there is still a need within the community.
Mayor Hughson inquired about funding and the ability to have multiple
vendors.
Council Member Baker stated that partnerships could help leverage the cost to
the City for these services. He noted that we call ourselves the Innovation
Corridor and increased internet access can support that.
After council discussion, council provided consensus on the following:
1. Obtain information from the School District
2. Pursue alternative options (or hybrid option) such as partnering with the
school district and local internet providers and seek possible grant funding
3. Ensure a baseline of 100Mbps is obtained when working with providers.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
2. Executive Session in accordance with:
1.
