City Council Meeting Minutes November 16, 2021
Mayor Hughson stated a similar Resolution (Resolution 2017-159R) was
passed a similar resolution in 2017, Resolution 2017-159R by Mayor
Thomaides and passed 7-0.
Mayor Hughson stated the Council passed a similar resolution in 2017 -
number 159. This was brought to us by former Mayor John Thomaides. I
believe it passed 7-0 and we were glad he brought it to us. The source is the U.
S. Conference of Mayors along with the Anti -Defamation League. Given the
recent incidents of anti-Semitism posters, etc. in our community, she thought
the new council might want to review it and sign on to it. She noted that she
did not write this. There are a few phrases that were out -dated that she
removed from consideration. She also thought it was a good idea to have this
ready for future incidents and not have to wait for a council meeting to make a
statement. She stated she is not necessarily asking council to sign on. It's
merely an offer for council to be able to stand united against hate, extremism,
and bigotry. She mentioned if council wants to amend it, they may. If council
don't want to sign on, they may vote no.
Council Member Baker followed up with Mayor Hughson regarding the
questions he posted on the message board. Mayor Hughson stated this
resolution came from the U.S.Conference of the Mayor's and what was
removed what was not relative to the resolution.
Council Member Baker expressed concern with the wording of the resolution
and would like to table item until after the case against the city has been
concluded.
Council Member Garza would like to postpone item until the outcome of the
federal lawsuit against the city has been settled and address issues that impact
the innate dignity of the residents.
MOTION TO POSTPONE: a motion was made by Deputy Mayor Pro Tem
Garza, seconded by Council Member Balser, to postpone Resolution
2021-234R until a date after the pending litigation in the United
States District Court; Western District of Texas; Eric Cervini, Wendy Davis,
David Gins, and Timothy Holloway v. Chase Stapp, Brandon Winkenwerder,
Matthew Daenzer, and City of San Marcos has been settled.
The motion carried by the following vote:
For: 5 - Mayor Hughson, Council Member Baker, Mayor Pro Tem Scott, Deputy Mayor Pro
Tem Garza and Council Member Prather
City of San Marcos Page 11
