29 <br />San Marcos could pursue Cultural District designation from the Texas <br />Commission on the Arts and encourage greater density of the arts Downtown. <br />(3.9) <br />Second Town Meeting Recommendations: <br />Develop signage forSan Marcos arts. <br />Develop sub-branding positioning San Marcos as an “art town.” <br />Make downtown an arts and musical destination. <br />EVENTS: <br />Stakeholder Survey Recommendations (with average score): <br />Incorporate the arts into Famer’s Market with music and crafts.(4.4) <br />The Eddie Durham Jazz Festival should be revived, tied into the Texas State <br />Jazz Festival, and take place in his community as well as on campus.(4.2) <br />Summer in the Park should become a mainstay annual event marked as a <br />significant San Marcos attraction.(4.2) <br />Create an Art and Eco Event that showcases both San Marcos’ art and its <br />identity as a steward of natural resources.(4.1) <br />Create a monthly Noche de Cultura (Cultural Night) at the Centro Cultural <br />Hispano in addition to cultural celebrations on Cinco de Mayo, 16 de Septiembre, <br />and Dia de Los Muertos.(4.1) <br />Second Town Meeting Recommendations: <br />Hold a fine arts festival involving everyone in the arts community. <br />Have an artist festival for networking purposes.(Done: Art 2 Art Network) <br />Have arts festivals/fairs for galleries. <br />Additional Comments <br />The following comments, grouped according to focus area, are additional input gathered <br />from the June 2011 town meeting attendees who completed the Stakeholder Surveys. <br />They are included here as a reference point and/or idea generating tool for further <br />development of arts and cultural programming in San Marcos. <br />SPACES <br />AIPP –Art in Public Places (as seen in Austin: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/aipp/)– <br />for San Marcos. <br />Community Art Center –classes for all ages; we need a visual arts <br />facility/museum (where classes can be taught); art center for gatherings, lessons, <br />and art shows using TSU artists and local artists. <br />We need a performing arts facilitywith production/recording abilities. Does not <br />need to be new –can renovate an existing building. <br />Utilize local real estate to establish a community performing arts center that is <br />easily accessible financially and geographically. <br /> <br />
