TO: Larry D./Pipey, City Manager
FROM: Ron F. Patterson
Director- PADS
Funds Required:
E3 OrdinanCe Date Submitted: 7/l/93
❑ Resolution
❑ Motion Agenda Date Requested: 7/12/93
❑ Discussion
Funds Available: Account Number:
Finance Approval:
City Attorney Review.
City Manager
Project/Proposal Title: Building Code Amendments
Date:
Date: 7 7 -
Date: %1^
Action Required by City Council: Approve, Approve with modifications or Deny
Project/Proposal Summary:
The City of San Marcos recently updated its building code to adopt the 1991 edition of
the Standard Building Code (a nationally recognized code). The newly adopted code also
contained several local amendments to the national codes. The new building code
supersedes all previously adopted ordinances related to building codes.
During the update process, a section of the previous City code regarding minimum fire
sprinkler requirements was inadvertently dropped out of the local amendments to the
building code. The subject provision required all residential occupancies over 15,000
gross square feet and all non-residential occupancies over 20,000 gross square feet to be
equipped with a fire sprinkler. The provision also addressed all buildings over 4 stories or
40' in height.
After consulting with the Fire Chief and Fire Marshall, the Building Inspection Division
and the Fire Department jointly recommend that the proposed local amendment to the
building code be made a part of Section 9 - Sprinklers, Standpipes and Alarm Systems.
This recommendation is being made in the interest of public safety and will help in the
early suppression of fires in large structures.
12/92
