V. PROJECT USE AND BENEFITS <br />A. Describe how the project will compiement the movement of people and goods of the surface <br />transportation system: <br />(Limeed M 900 chwWters) <br />The Gross-''own Pathway will tae the spine of the City's bicycle and pedestrian system. It <br />wili prc`? de a : -ansportation corridor that will afford safe transportation for persons who <br />choose an alterative form of travel from motorized vehicles. Once constructed, the trail <br />will create a direct passage for non-motorized vehicles from IH35 to the University. The <br />trail will facilitate the movement of pedestrians & cyclists in a safe and efficient manner <br />within the City's transportation network of thoroughfares, collector streets and open <br />spaces. The intent of the City. with its many partners, is to snake San Marcos a bicycle <br />& pedestrian friendly community by providing safe linkages to schools, businesses, parks <br />& open spaces. <br />B. Describe the activities and benefits that the project prcvides under the categoq which it qualifies: <br />!Limitact to POO characters) <br />--I,a project qua:iftes under the "Provision of Facilities for Pedestrians & Bicycles". The <br />proposed project will be independent of the existing roadways, but at the same time <br />aford safe travel on a more direct path for those that travel them. The path will extend <br />from IH35 at the San Marcos Visitor Center, beside the Nature Center, through Lucio <br />Park, accross Cheatham St, through Rio Vista Park, under an existing railroad, into City <br />Park, connecting to a University funded trail that is currently in design for construction. At. <br />the end of this portion of the trail that is under design, the last portion of the TE trail <br />proposed in this application, will complete the great loop along Charles Austin (Dr. past <br />the River Center and the planned Unirsity Visitor Center then on to campus. <br />C, Descr':t:e how the project will improve social, economic an 4 envirc imental aspects of the area, <br />region or state: <br />?!!? <br />(L;m('ed to SI/L G''J !E Sf <br />Sar r.?Iarcos is c=-i eated to becoming a bikeiped friendly city. Through the lurtner <br />development of the rig aitr ke trail system, the City & university will encourage the use of <br />non-motcnzed vehicles, which will reduce the use of fossil fuels for travel, decreasing <br />greenhouse gas emmissions. Bike: pods will save their gas dollars by using human power <br />to move about the community. The businesses and schools will benefit from having such <br />a safe trail system available which twil bring shoppers and students to their doors. <br />Eic.cles are much less expensive to maintain and operate than cars,. allowing the cost <br />sa,,?ngs ,o be spent within the community. The hike./bike trail will be used for events <br />incl-ding runs and bicycle rides which always bang 1000's of people to town with their <br />tcu, SM dollars <br />D.
