8. Staff Reports
C.J. Morgan reported that he is taking on three projects: recycling, water conservation,
and transportation. He encouraged walking, biking, and carpooling to school. He walks
along LBJ; it is dangerous to walk there, and he would like to see the university and city
take on the issue. He thanked everyone that participated in Bobcat Build. He
participated in the cleanup in the Sagewood area. He would like to see residents /students
get more involved in community service and clean up instead of just paying a stiff fine.
9. City Council Reports
John Thomaides reported that he had a good time with the student planners with Bobcat
Build. Natalie Diaz and her team picked up thousands of cigarette butts. He attended the
Congress of New Urbanism and will be putting together a report on what he learned. San
Marcos already has the bones of new urbanism and would benefit from non - sprawl
development and being more pedestrian friendly. He serves on the Austin -San Antonio
Corridor Council, and the director has communicated with our city that Senator
Wentworth went to bat for San Marcos and has made sure an overpass on Aquarena
Springs is on the list for funding.
Mayor Narvaiz reported that she had asked the American Legion to lead us in the pledge
tonight. She attended their annual conference, and they repeated the preamble at that
time. She was impressed that they are still very committed to the ideals in the preamble.
She appreciates the work they do with the young people in the community. Mayor
Narvaiz also reported they had discussed trash at the CAPCOG meeting. There is a
deadline of 2025 to close the landfill site which will force waste to go elsewhere. We
cannot deal city by city; we will need to deal this with collectively. She reported that she
will attend the transportation forum to stay current with funding and other critical issues
and will share the critical information that will impact the city. She wants to put our
city's perspective into mix, get educated and better represent cities our size.
CONSENT AGENDA
10. Consider approval of minutes
A. April 1, 2008 Special Meeting
B. April 1, 2008 Regular Meeting
11.
