ADVOCACY <br />FINDINGS <br />4 <br />1. The City of San Marcos and local <br />organizations host many events <br />related to historic preservation <br />throughout the year. <br />2. The City has hosted events and <br />activities for Preservation Month in <br />May since at least 2022. <br />3. San Marcos' rich and diverse history <br />presents ongoing opportunities <br />to collaborate with preservation <br />and community partners to <br />further celebrate and elevated <br />underrepresented stories and <br />communities. <br />POTENTIAL PARTNERS <br />Texas State University <br />Council for the Indigenous and <br />Tejano Community <br />Centro Cultural Hispano de San <br />Marcos <br />Calaboose African American <br />Museum <br />Dunbar Heritage Association <br />Indigenious Cultures Institute <br />SOLUTIONS <br />(9 <br />1. Build on the success of past Preservation Month <br />events and continue robust programming <br />in the future. Future topics can highlight <br />underrepresented histories including Indigenous, <br />Mexican American, and Black history to ensure <br />a more complete and factual narrative of the <br />City's heritage. For example, partnering with <br />Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos to host a <br />Hispanic heritage preservation workshop. <br />2. Collaborate with preservation and community <br />partners to establish or support equitable City <br />celebrations for events such as Juneteenth, <br />Cinco de Mayo, 16 de Septiembre, Indigenous <br />Peoples' Day, Native American Heritage Month, <br />and Hispanic Heritage Month, and other cultural <br />events, including sponsoring cultural heritage <br />activities for children. <br />3. Widely promote historic preservation events <br />(not limited to City -sponsored events) on the <br />City's website, social media, and visitsanmarcos. <br />com, and in the Planing & Development Services <br />monthly newsletter.
