DESIGNATED HISTORIC PROPERTIES
Historic resources can be designated on three levels: local, state, and federal, the benefits of the last
two of which were compared in Chapter 1. While state and federal designation is largely honorary
and can qualify properties for certain grants and tax credits, local designation provide more
protection and long-term benefits for property owners.
FEDERALLY DESIGNATED
The City has 41 historic resources listed in the
NRHP, including individual resources and districts.
Resources designated in the NRHP are significant
at the local, state, or national level, and meet the
specific NRHP criteria. San Marcos is also bisected
by a National Historic Trail, the El Camino Real de
los Tejas. National Historic Trails are historic travel
routes significant at the national level.
Table,3.
