She noted that the educational attainment is lower here than the rest of the <br />. corridor. <br />Gaylord Bose reported that he had attended the Memorial Day service at the San Marcos <br />Cemetery. He thanked Major Davis, retired, for his 50 years of military service. Boy <br />Scout Troop 112 presented the flag ceremony, and it was very moving. On the 24th he <br />assisted the Lion's Club with tube rentals. The river was full, and the crowd behavior <br />was outstanding. He thanked Ken Bell and Rodney Cobb for their service. He also noted <br />the excellent response during an emergency with an injured swimmer. On the 26th he <br />attended the Memorial Day service at Memorial Park, honoring all the people giving the <br />ultimate price. He also attended Randy Holmes' retirement from the Police Department <br />and gave a big thanks to wives of these officers. On the 31St he volunteered with the <br />Lion's Club again and noted that we are fortunate with the quality of people we have <br />coming to our river. He also attended the Hays/Caldwell County Women's Center <br />banquet and reported that Chili's will donate 10% of a customer's bill to the Women's <br />Center. He thanked Richard Mendoza and his staff for accommodating the Sunset <br />Retirement Center request for a covered bus stop. <br />Chris Jones reported there is a new website advertising all the events on June 19, 20 and <br />21 at www.j_uneteenthsanmarcos.com. He attended the NLC Energy Environment <br />Resource Conference in Cleveland. Topics included sustainability and climate change; <br />water supply planning and if the feds should have a role in assisting state and local <br />entities; invasive species showing up throughout the country; and Senate Bill 3036 <br />• regarding a cap amount for carbon emissions. He met with the LBJ and MLK <br />Commemorative group. He also attended another meeting that was held at the Activity <br />Center and was pleased by the positive comments made regarding the center. <br />John Thomaides reported that there will be an Austin-San Antonio Commuter Rail <br />Committee meeting at the Activity Center on Friday at 10:00 a.m. He noted that he will <br />not be present at the June 17 meeting because he will be attending the Best Practices in <br />University/City Relationships Conference in College Station. <br />Mayor Susan Narvaiz reported that staff had met to discuss TERP funding, and the <br />application process might not go forward at this time and will go back to Senator <br />Wentworth to adjust the verbage. She reported that she spoke at the National Coalition <br />for Literacy in Houston, focusing on GED adult education and Workforce education. She <br />noted that vocational training is extremely important. She attended the Kinder graduation <br />at Travis Elementary and was impressed that each student told what college they would <br />attend in the future. She thanked the teachers for planting that seed. She reported a new <br />group has been launched in town - Big Brothers and Big Sisters. She also reported on a <br />special book created by three Girl Scouts in conjunction with the Greenbelt Alliance. <br />Mayor Narvaiz closed by reporting on an issue raised by a citizen regarding the condition <br />of the railroad tracks.
