If funded, it is our
understanding it will enable the library to develop new
services and improve existing services for adults with less
than a 12th grade education.

There is a great need for this
Thirty-eight percent of the
graduated from high school.
percent of the people over the
have a high school diploma.

type of service in San Marcos.
citizens of Texas have not
However, in excess of forty
age of 25 in our City do not

People have dropped out of school for a variety of reasons.
It is imperative that they be encouraged to continue their
education at whatever age they are ready to learn. Education
should be a life-long process.

Dropout prevention is currently a major focus of the Texas
Public Schools. The State Board of Education is committed
to reducing the dropout rate. Schools and communities across
the State must join hands if this is to become a reality.

Research tells us that family related factors cause the dropout
cycle to continue. Parents or older siblings of dropouts
often have not graduated from high school and the literacy
level of the youth is directly related to the literacy level
of the mother. This cycle must be broken at the adult level.

Lack of skills and poverty go hand in hand. Poverty among
young women with small children is rampant in America.
Something must be done to break this cycle. Education is
viewed as the key.

city hall' 630 e. hopkins . san marcos, texas' 78666 . 512/353-4444
