PARr IV
PR:mJ::'r HARRAT.lVE

San Marcos Municipal Airport occupies an important place in the Central
Texas system of airports. It I S prime location, at the midpoint between
San Antonio and Austin, makes it uniquely situated to absorb an
increasing share of general aviation activity in the region. In 1986,
a full Instrument Landing System (ILS) was installed on the approach to
Runway 12. ~. recently updated Airport Master Plan shows that the
aircraft activity at San Marcx>s Municipal Airport is forecast to
increase from the current 75,000 annual operations in 1987 to
approximately 219,621 by the year 2005.

In view of the Airport's geographic location and the increased level of
activity projected for the airport, a major program of aviation
facility preservation and improvement focusing on the reconstruction of
existing runways and taxiways has been ongoing during the past five
years ¡ focusing upon the FAA-funded reconstruction of Runway 12-30, the
construction of parallel taxiways, and the installation of precision
instrument approach capabilities to Runway 12. With the irrminent
canpletion of this runway improvement, the City of San Marcx>s is now
focusing upon and seeking FAA participation in the
restoration/reconstruction and lighting of Runway 08-26, (the longest
runway at San Marcx>s Municipal Airport), and the taXiways linking this
runway to the aircraft parking apron. This runway is particularly
utilized by larger turboprop and jet aircraft, because its 6,300'
length penni ts a greater margin of safety to be attained by these
aircraft.

These improvements are listed below in priority order and are the
principal i tens of this application for federal funds:

1.-
2.

Reconstruct Existing Runway 08-26 (Approximately 5,380')

New M.I.R.L., R.E.I.L. for Reconstructed Runway 08-26,
and Non Lighted Supplemental Wind Cones

3.

Reconstruct Existing Taxiway" A"

4.

Reconstruct Existing Taxiway "Bn

Item )1I'IIIIher 1 - Reca1st:zuctia1 of Bxist:inq Runway 3-26 was originally
identified in the Master Plan Update as a seal coating; however, recent
winters have cause rapid deterioration to the runway surface which
requires :inmediate attention to permit cx>ntinued use. This runway is
located adjacent to the parking apron, tenni.nal area, and aviation side
facilities, is the longest runway (6,300') at San Marcos Municipal
Airport, and is extensively utilized by jet aircraft during favorable
wind cx>ndi tions .

Based upon a preliminary assessment of the runway condition, the seal
coating identified in the Master Plan Update will be insufficient to
properly ensure continued use of this important runway.
