o <br />Fund and hire a full-time Education and Workforce Development <br />Coordinator at the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce. <br />o <br />Identify funding sources that will enable SMCISD to re-establish its <br />Partners in Education Coordinator position. <br /> <br />Gain greater support from the business community for career academies at <br />SMCISD, Lockhart ISD, and Luling ISD. <br />o <br />Support the development of Job Shadowing programs for students i <br />grades 9 to 12, and involve a wide range of local employers. <br />o <br />Further grow business and community support for school districts by <br />providing high school students with internship opportunities at local <br />businesses during summer break. <br />o <br />Offer high school teachers externship opportunities with local <br />industries enhance their practical knowledge and ability to prepare <br />students for future careers. <br />o <br />Connect career academies with Greater San Marcos target industry <br />clusters. <br /> <br />Fully support the continued success of the San Marcos Education <br />Foundation. <br />o <br />When appropriate, reach out to regional public and private partners to <br />capitalize the Foundation. <br />o <br />Seek state and federal grants to augment public education through <br />the auspices of the Foundation. <br />o <br />At Chamber programs and in publications, promote opportunities to <br />donate to or volunteer for Foundation events. <br />o <br />Encourage the Foundation to reinvigorate efforts behind the San <br />Marcos Alumni Association. <br /> <br />Action 3: Promote good news about Greater San Marcos <br />accomplishmentsand investments in public education and its youth. <br />Develop a marketing piece that <br />highlights key programs and <br />performance data, and illustrates how <br />Greater San Marcos schools compare <br />to other Texas school districts. <br />o <br />Ensure that positive news and <br />data reaches regional real <br />estate agents to improve <br />perceptions of area schools. <br />Assist area school districts with sharing success stories with the local <br />business community and residents. <br />o <br />Inform regional media outlets about improvements and <br /> <br />accomplishments in local schools. <br />Final Strategy <br />September 2009 17 <br /> <br />
